Starting Wednesday, members of the warehouse club who have this card and pay for a “Plus” membership can earn up to 5% cash back on Sam’s Club purchases (in stores or online)—2% more than Club members already earn with the card. The program update also removed the 3% back on travel purchase rewards that the Mastercard formerly offered. The category was cut to better align the program with its cardholders’ actual use of the Mastercard, Sam’s Club said. Travel wasn’t a popular spending category among Sam’s club cardholders even before the pandemic disrupted travel plans. The Sam’s Club Mastercard, issued by Synchrony Bank, rewards-earning rates are now as follows:
3% cash back on eligible Sam’s Club purchases, in-store or online (up to 5% back for Plus members)5% cash back on fuel purchases made anywhere, on up to $6,000 in purchases annually3% cash back on dining and takeout purchases1% cash back on everything else
The Sam’s Club rewards program updates go beyond the refreshed earnings rates. All Club members will now get their rewards issued digitally instead of via paper checks. Rewards will be automatically loaded onto membership cards to then be used for more Sam’s Club purchases or redeemed for cash back. To promote easier and safer shopping experiences, especially during the pandemic, Synchrony Bank is also supporting contactless card payments through the Sam’s Club mobile app.
